When everything goes digital on Feb. 17, 2009, will "over the air" high def still be available with antennae?
I was thinking anything "over the air" was analog. Am I wrong?
You say the signal will be useless without the converter box. My understanding was that the converter box takes a digital signal and converts it to analog. But in the case of OTA HD, you would be starting with an analog signal. Since HD tv's already are able to receive analog (component inputs) what needs converting? The question is whether the analog signal will still even be transmitted.
Sounds like a little muddiness here.
As to your specific question, is everything 'over the air' analog? Simply put, you are wrong (no offense intended). Currently, most stations are broadcasting both analog AND digital, on two separate transmitters and frequencies. Only digital supports hi-def. If you have an HDTV now receiving over-the-air hi-def (thus digital) nothing will change for you.
Another thing to keep in mind -- all HDTV is digital, but not all digital is HDTV. Many stations have 'sub-channels' which are digital but in standard definition, not high. And some others have gone digital but not HD. You normally don't have to be concerned over this, your TV (or converter box with analog TV) handles everything.
In February, all analog transmissions will indeed cease (with a few exceptions). But, some frequency reassignments of the digital channels are likely, so you'll probably have to do some autoscanning and the like, I wouldn't know how well that sort of fact will be publicized.
