How do you sew a blindstitch hem by hand?
I'm trying to finish a quilt edge and want to use a blindstitch, not machine stitch. Used to know how, but have forgotten.
I'm not sure how good a description I can give without being able to show you somehow, but here goes....
Start with a single threaded needle-- i.e. a knot in only one end of the thread, not both ends knotted together. I prefer silamide for something like this because it is very fine and very strong, so you get a good clean stitch that will not break easily.
I'm assuming you're binding your edge off, so you would start by taking a stitch from the inside of the binding to the outside to hide your knot on the inside of your binding. This first stitch should be very close to the folded edge of the binding where you are trying to stitch it down to the quilt-- coming out through the fold of the binding would be ideal. Take a short stitch (maybe a quarter inch) through the top layers of the quilt very close to where your thread comes out of the binding. This stitch should come up through the top of the quilt about a quarter of an inch down the binding from where you've started. It should still be incredibly close to the folded edge of the binding. Finish this stitch by bringing your needle and thread through the folded edge of the binding, being careful to stay very close to the folded edge (right through the fold is always best) and at the same time making sure that you grab at least 2-3 threads of the binding in every stitch. This sets you up to again take a quarter inch stitch through the top layers of your quilt and come back up again through the fold of the binding, etc, etc, for sometime. Be careful to not stitch all the way through to the other side of your quilt.
Any basic sewing book will have good diagrams of this sort of stitch.
Good luck! Hope this makes some sense!
