Refinishing my 1911, any suggestions? (Charles daly)?
Just bought a 1911 .45 ACP Charles-Daly from a friend for $400. It is a little scrached up from carrying, but in fairly good shape. I am going to replace the firing pin (w/ a titanium firing pin) because it probably has never been replaced, the recoil spring + bushings (I was thinking of using the square style spring to help with jams, what do you think?) But besides the inner workings I want to refinish the gun. I was thinking of ordering the aftermarket slide from cheaperthandirt (it is a world war II style slide with low profile sights) and has a green/grey color? Any other suggestions? Only sincere suggestions please!!
Your gun is parkerized and the only thing that I can think of would be hardchrome (Armaloy, MetaLife, etc..). Titanium firing pins are more for raceguns than anything else and steel is much more reliable and last longer. I have been shooitng 1911 guns for a long time and what on earth is a square spring? One cost effective thing you could do is buy a match grade barrel bushing and fit it to your gun using some emery paper if needed. Replacing the sldie is not woth it unless the slide is cracked, rails are trashed, or locking lug recesses are worn down.
