Complete and Incomplete Combustion Investigation with Acetylene?
In this lab we had to have four test tubes upside down in a beaker of water. The test tubes had water in them as well. We had to insert pieces of calcium carbide under the test tubes and have them as follows: one full of acetylene, one 3/4 full, one 1/2 full, one 1/10 full.
Results:
the full one: burned slow and produced a little bit of soot
3/4: burned fast and lots of soot
1/2: burned fast and lots of soot
1/10: burned fast and no soot
Answer these questions:
1. what was the word equation for complete combustion?
2. What was the equation for incomplete combustion?
3. In which test tube did incomplete combustion occur?
4. What did you see when the acetylene in this test tube burned that made you reach this conclusion?
PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!
The key here is the amount of air that replaced the water remaining in each test tube. When you allowed the water to come out, air went in to replace it. The tube that was full of acetylene could not take in any air, so the only oxygen available to it for burning the acetylene was what could get to it at the mouth of the test tube. The one that had the least amount of acetylene in it had the greatest amount of air, and hence of oxygen available for burning the acetylene. The others were in between these two.
For the complete combustion you would say acetylene reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water.
Any incomplete combustion would also produce some soot, and the more soot that was produced, the more incomplete was the combustion.
