I need some help with purchase of a micrometer?
i need to measure the center of a circular piece which is ca. 9mm thick. the outer edge is thicker ca 20mm. i also need to measure at the center. The piece has about a 50mm diameter
Looking at micrometers, the specs often say min and max range. When the min is not zero will the micrometer not close tightly? i need to measure < 9mm...
so i need a micrometer that will measure from about 8mm - 20mm and has a jaw depth of 60mm....

no i'm talking about all external dimensions.
a micrometer will do it. i just need a big one!
I don't know how much money you have but you are talking big dollars or local currency. The tool you need is not a micrometer unless you need extreme accuracy (<.001) of one inch. /,01mm. a dial or even a vernier calipers are much cheaper. you will also need a set of ball anvils to go with it. Make sure they are from the same company that you get the calipers from or they may not fit well.
When the closed measurement is not .0 the jaws do not close!- wont work for your use. micrometers measure .0-1.00
1.000-2.000,,.3.000-4.000 etc calipers measure 0.0-4.000or longer.
You should get a Starrette catalog they may show what you need their on line edition is small but may have your tool to.
depending on how often need to measure this item ,you could ask a machinest to measure this for for you.....
