If I have a certified solitary diamond, will a jewelry store mount in one of their own settings?
Yes. They should guarantee their work, but will they? That's another question.
You should always be concerned. Not just of unscrupulous jewelers, but accidents happen too.
The key: Know your diamond intimately.
Get a 30x magnifying loop and compare your diamond against the certificate (usually GIA or AGS).
All diamonds have inclusions. It's like a birthmark and no two are alike.
Whenever I take my wife's diamond in, both the jeweler and I look at the diamond together under a loop and compare it against the certificate. That way, we're both on the same page about the diamond.
When I get the diamond back, we both check it against the certificate so that we're both in agreement that this is the same diamond.
Also, with loop in hand, it helps you to check the workmanship and to check that no cracks or otherwise unseen damage was done.
