How do you safely dismantle an electric bass guitar?
I have to take apart a Fender Precision Bass in order to sand and repaint the body. I know how to take off the pick guard but that's about it. I'm worried I could damage the pick-ups or bridge or something else as I take it apart. I need to be able to put it back together afterwards. Can anyone give me a step by step or a link to the information I seek?
This is not a vintage bass. It is brand new.
If it is a NEW bass, and made in China, Korea, Indonesia,Mexico or Japan (all are possibilities), you have an epoxy finish on it.
Don't make the attempt at this refinishing unless you have the tools to do it. You can't just sand the stuff off without doing real damage to the guitar and your lungs. If you don't know what tools you need then you shouldn't make the attempt.
If the bass was built more than 20 years ago DO NOT REFINISH IT! EVER! My bet is that you could buy 10 new basses with the value of the 1 old one.
As far as the rest I think you'll need to cut or desolder at least 3 wires. Pay attention to how the wires were connected and make notes or drawings if you have to. Be very attentive to how the neck and bridge and pickups are mounted. Don't use the old strings.
Contrary to an answer above, never just mask off things with tape. Do the job correctly and you'll be much happier.
