Erik Satie: Your thoughts on him and favourite piece?

Satie is a composer I don't hear much of these days, either here on CM forum or on the classical music radio station that I tune into. Anywho, not only do I personally love his strange little compositions, but I enjoy reading about the man just as much.

I'm reading a book at the moment based on the recollections of M.D. Calvocoressi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michel_Dimitri_Calvocoressi and he speaks about his experiences with Satie, 'A humorist, a practical joker, and a pertuber of the common peace.'

On his reputation as a strange character, Satie 'rather shamefaced' told Calvocoressi : "That's how I am... Supposing I had to appear in public as a pianist, I'd love to do so wearing a long red frock coat and a big fireman's helmet... for no particular reason, but I'd love to, really."

So what are your thoughts on Satie and what is your favourite piece - if any? (My personal favourite is his Gnossienne No. 3.)
