What is the difference between a motor and a servo?
I just wanted to know what the difference was between a servo motor and a regular motor. I kinda have a vague idea that motors provide mostly power while servos provide control, but I need to know a lot more than that about them. Like I need to know the functions of each one and how one is better than the other. help me?
A servo motor is a specific type of motor containing a special control system. The special control system allows it to be controlled with inputs of a rotational position, rather than just a general input.
Ordinary motors just take a direct input of electric power.
Drive motors take an input of electric power, and a signal input of desired angular speed, and their control system selects the amount of electric power to match that desired angular speed, using a feedback system.
Servo motors take an input of electric power and a signal input of desired shaft position. Their control system rotates the motor as necessary, selecting when and when not to consume power, and attempts to find the desired shaft rotational position, using a feedback system.
Ordinary motors are said to be controlled with open loop control. You give an input of power, and it just plain spins, depending on what mechanical effects come in to play.
Drive motors and servo motors are said to be controlled with closed loop control. The motors contain sensors, which detect error in the output, and adjust the power consumption based on that error to match the desired value of the output.
