what is the best size gage wire for my home theater set up?
As with everything in life it comes down to what your priorities are. If money isn't an issue go with the largest and most esoteric wire you can find. It might not make a real or audible difference ... but you will have bragging rights!
But for most of us price is an issue so a bit more selective approach is necessary.
Audio purists will say you need large guage wire, made with low oxygen content and/or other special and esoteric chemical and electrical characteristics, and terminated in special gold plated lugs / connectors.
In reality most recommendations are that unless you have "golden ears" and top notch equipment (read $10,000 and up) you don't need anything larger than about 12-16 guage for most setups. Beyond this you are highly unlikely to notice any difference.
Look for multistrand, oxygen free wire in this size range. Move toward the larger sizes for high power systems and longer speaker runs. Make sure it has some means of identifying the specific conductor (e.g. different colour conductors, marking on the insulation) so that phase can be maintained (it doesn't matter which way wires are connected, but it is important to maintain consistency in wiring. e.g. silver wire from red post to + or red post of speaker on all channels).
At least as important as the wire guage is the choice of connectors (to ensure good electrical connections). Banana plugs or spade lugs are good choices ... and they can limit wire size choices since they simply won't accept wires larger than about 12 ga. Beyond a certain size actual connection to binding posts can become an issue ... and may increase risk of shorting out the two conductors.
Bottom line (see the links) is that for most people will be well served with 14 ga wire using good quality connectors.
