ABS plastic cups are marked on the bottom fit for consumption?
We have been using a number of glasses of Bath IKEA for many years. Are marked with recycling code ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) on the bottom. I'm having trouble finding information about ABS. Do you think they are safe to use? (No gut feelings, please!) I have priced stainless steel cups are expensive. I do not want to use tempered glass in the bathroom. I wonder if enamel coated metal cups (like the cowboys use!) are safe. I understand the chemical BPA in # 7 is not safe. I also understand that it is safer stick to items marked as 2, 4 and 5. I've changed my water bottles and stainless steel coffee cups. Thank you for your scientific help!
If there was a problem, your water cup would be the least of their worries:) (1) ABS plastic has been around since the fifties, and no history of problems. (2) If you have a recent (last 20 years or less) at home, or had any pipe work done, ABS plastic used in pipes in your home. (3) ABS plastic used in the construction of safety showers and emergency eyewash hospitals. (4) Material Safety Data Sheet in ABS plastic link: 20MSDS http://www.navylanterns.com/Battery%,% 20pdf.pdf
