Can I weld a truck's chassis?
Few weeks ago, I wanted to mount a frame of a mechanical device on the chassis of a truck. My boss told me not to weld the chassis as it will weaken the chassis's steel. Hence I only use the existing holes on the chassis frame and bolt them together. I don't even dare to drill a single hole on my costumer's vehicle.
The alignment of this mechanical device are crucial. I found that without those tack welds, it involves too many chain block and very time consuming in the mounting process. Can I weld the chassis? Or can I drill the chassis?
I am gonna repeat the same job very soon. So any advice or precautions are appreciated.
I wouldn't go drilling 1" holes all over the frame, but a few smaller holes and a little welding won't hurt a thing. Frames are purposely built a little on the beefy side because manufacturers know that sometimes people do drill/weld on them. Good luck, and don't worry about it.
