Diaphragm valves (or membrane valves) consists of a valve body with two or more ports, a diaphragm, and a "saddle" or seat in which the diaphragm closes the valve. The valve is constructed of either plastic or steel.
Originally, diaphragm valve has been developed for use in applications that are unsanitary. Later in the design was adapted for use in bio-pharmaceutical industry by using compatible materials that can withstand disinfection and sterilization methods.
There are two main categories of diaphragm valves: one set of stamps in a "dump" (chair) and another (sometimes called a "straight path" of the valve) together in a seat. The main difference is a valve seat type has two ports in line with each other on opposite sides of the valve seat while the guy has input / output ports located at an angle of 90 degrees to one another. The type of chair is the most common applications process and the seat type is more commonly used as a tank bottom valve but there is also a process valve. While diaphragm valves usually come in the form of two ports, but also can come up with three ports or more. When more than three ports are included, usually require more than a diaphragm, however, special dual actuators can handle more ports with a single membrane.
Diaphragm valves can be manual or automated. Its application is in general and close valves in process systems within the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The older generation of these valves is not adequate for regulating and controlling flows process, however new developments in this area have successfully tackled this problem.
In addition to the familiar, two-way diaphragm valve, other types include: three-way valve deadleg zero, sterile access port, block and purge valve valbow and bottom of the tank just to name a few.
Actuators
Diaphragm valves can be controlled by different types of actuators. The most common diaphragm valves for pneumatic actuators, in this type of valve, air pressure is applied through a Schrader valve, which raises the diaphragm and opens the valve. This type of valve is very fast and as such is one of the most common valves used in valve operations where speed is a necessity.
