welding projects...any ideas?
hey im 14....i love welding and working with metal.....i have already made a C clamp...but im looking to make another small sized project tht wouldnt be all tht hard....any ideas on wat i could build
Torch, arc, or MIG?
If torch, make a stand for your tanks that holds all the rods you use (in PVC tubes) and igniter, mask, alternate torch tips, tip cleaner, etc. Mine sits on slight rails so I can put a hand truck blade under it to move without the space that wheels waste.
If arc or MIG, a "tool box" but matched to the needs of each - to hold chipping hammer, rods/wire coils, safety glasses or helmet, gloves, wire brushes.
If MIG you can work with thin metal that can be cut with tin snips (not galvanized!) and cut out flat outlines and weld to make statues or useful stuff - support for a bird feeder or for pans for a dog. Make the designs by cutting out paper outlines and taping them, then take apart to cut the metal.
You can do the same thing with torch or arc but with thicker metal that is harder to cut.
If you haven't yet worked with tubing, as opposed to flat or bar stock, you might get some and practice making welds that don't break through.
This link http://www.mikegigi.com/projects.htm#WELDTAB shows two fairly rough but practical uses of tubing of different sizes to make adjustable or sliding tables, while this link http://www.mikegigi.com/projects.htm#WELDSTP (picture is just above link target) discusses a simple welded step that uses expanded steel mesh for a surface. The steps become more useful because tubing, conduit or pipe can be run thru to link them if the openings of the tubing face the right way. If the openings are down, conduit legs can be used to make a work surface (not shown on site yet.) Just below is a gimbal frame of 1/2" tubing and elsewhere on my site are a "roof" with legs that insert so the height could be changed or the top kept and moved http://www.mikegigi.com/m-bckyrd.htm#RAIN and http://www.mikegigi.com/m-bckyrd.htm#GLORYHOLE (scroll up) a simple tubing frame for supporting a work area with builtin handle. As you can see there is also a lot of other welding. I use a torch.
