Buy snow cables? Or is auto 4 wheel drive good enough?

I'm planning a trip for snowboarding, but the icy and snowy roads are a concern. is auto 4 wheel drive (on a Rav 4) good enough for a snowboarding trip? Or should I go get snow cables?

Snow cables? I'd think chains would be a lot more reliable.

Anyhow, what matters most is your tires. If you only have all-seasons, definitely get snow chains. If it snows hard, and you don't have the skills to deal with it (and I'm guessing you don't, or you wouldn't be asking), you definitely need the tools to deal with it.

Some good snow tires, particularly with studs, should make snow chains redundant. But still, it's better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.
